Notre Dame's Data, AI, and Computing Initiative pursues an ambitious research and education agenda that balances ground-breaking foundational advances in data, AI and computing with transformative interdisciplinary applications targeting societal challenges.
Status Update
The Data, AI, and Computing Initiative launched in September 2025. The initiative’s aim is to advance purposeful data, AI, and computing — excelling in foundational research while catalyzing interdisciplinary collaboration and real-world translation to address pressing societal challenges.
A call for working groups gathered proposals from 139 faculty and created 19 working groups on the topics of AI for Science & Engineering; RISE AI; Health Data & AI; Foundational Models; Quantitative and Computational Social Sciences; and Digital Humanities. Winter Schools for Scientific AI in Chile launched in collaboration with Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile and the Scientific AI Initiative at the University of Notre Dame.
The iTREDS program, a flagship experiential learning program of the Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society, that focuses on preparing undergraduate students in ethical and socially responsible data science through a unique combination of research, teaching, and society engagement. This year, iTREDS received twice as many applications as in previous years, demonstrating strong undergraduate interest in this unique program.

Following a campus-wide call for proposals, the Data, AI, and Computing Initiative has funded 19 faculty-led Working Groups to identify promising directions for future research, recruitment, team science, and translational impact in DAC.
DAC Initiative convenes Industry Leaders Roundtable
The event, featuring 40 industry leaders from across sectors, highlighted how artificial intelligence is transforming workforce expectations and the University’s approach to curriculum and learning.
