Carlos Tello Barreda

Biography

Carlos Tello Barreda recently completed a Mellon Sawyer Seminar Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Global Indigenous Studies at Brown University. He holds a PhD in Native American Studies with a designated emphasis in Studies in Performance and Practice from the University of California, Davis. He also holds a master’s degree in journalism from the University of British Columbia, and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. His scholarship examines processes of ethnic and gender identity formation in the Andean region of South America. Carlos is Peruvian and was born in Lima, the country’s capital.

For eight years, Tello Barreda has been working with the Qhapaq Qolla dance troupe of Paucartambo, Cusco, whose members are the protagonists of two of the most important public celebrations of the Peruvian Andes. In addition to advancing his first book project while at Notre Dame, Tello Barreda will collaborate with Qhapaq Qolla dancers to complete an accompanying documentary and will create a media archive to provide the dancers with long-term access to all of the materials gathered across nearly a decade of research.
